Peridot was chosen both for its light green hue—Hildegard’s sacred colour—and according to the saint’s own 12th-century writings on this particular gem. In her book Physica or Liber Simplicinis Medicinæ Hildegard writes: “This stone strengthens knowledge in a person who always carries it with him.”
